SIBU (May 12): The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) hopes to ensure cleaner roads in the central business district (CBD) area with the introduction of its sweeper truck.

SMC chairman Clarence Ting said this is part of SMC's efforts to provide better services to Sibu folk.

"The contractor will start the service as soon as possible and they will sweep at night, every day.

"This contract is for downtown Sibu. This is the first one and if it is good, we will extend it to other commercial areas," he said at the launching of the first road sweeper truck at Jalan Alan last night.

He pointed out SMC is not trying to reduce the number of its workers, as the mechanised service is needed because Sibu will continue to have more roads.

He said such trucks are used in other countries and it is time for Sibu to adopt such machinery.

Among those present at the launch was SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley.
